Cartridge convertor - Z24 convertor

Ink bottles - T51 or T52 ink

Extra fine has been discontinued by Lamy as a fitted option for this pen. If you would like an extra-fine nib please order the nib separately. If you would like it fitted, please mention this in the comments section of your order. Limited edition pens only come with fine or medium nibs, any other nib needs to be ordered separately and we can fit this for you.

The Lamy nibs are well-regarded and for a good reason: they give a very smooth writing experience. The pen is cheap and does feel a little cheap. I bought it as a travel pen that I wouldn't mind too much if I lost it, and it works well for that. Writes well and handles well. However, if I had the money I would probably spend just a little more on the Al-Star which is basically the same pen (and exactly the same nibs) except that it has an aluminium body which is a little more substantial.

Nice, robust fountain pen. Colour is brighter than I expected and I hadn't realised the barrel was angled - not that it's a problem, but it does control where your fingers go with respect to the nib angle (I suspect this is by design, and hope it'll improve my handwriting!) Comfortable to write with, and the ink flow is smooth, even with the fine nib. Thanks to John Hancox (other reviewer) for the heads-up on German nib sizes - I find standard medium nibs (Parker etc.) a bit heavy, the Lamy fine nib is perfect. Despite it being on special order, it was only a week from order to delivery - excellent communication from the company all the way. Will definitely order from Bureau Direct again.

I bought a standard black Safari fountain pen. I have been using this pen for day but my first impression is that it is very good value. Ink flow is good and even. The medium nib is stiffer than my Parker Sonnet but is smooth writing. The medium width is slightly thinner than the medium on my Sonnet and is a good choice for general handwriting. The shape of the section is comfortable for holding. Service was good with no problems.

I have to admit I was really impressed with the level of service provided by Bureau Direct. Jo was very pleasant to deal with via email and willing to go the extra mile to assist me. Thank you Jo for amazing service that beats the likes of Apple or Amazon. As for the pen, it is outstanding. My adventure with pens started at school and now, 20 years later I am trying to get back into handwritting with a fountain pen. I tried several entry models from different brands like Parker and Cross - there was always something wrong with them... ergonomy, nib size or horrible scratchy feel when writing. Lamy Safari (Yellow) is not only cool, fun and just the right size but it writes like a dream. Fine nib works best for me (extra fine is a bit scratchy) and it glides perfectly. It is as practical and easy to use as ballpoint pen. Vibrant color makes it easier to spot... so loosing or misplacing it would be difficult. Perfect service and perfect product. Keep it that way!

However, the medium nib is a little broad for my own particular liking so I've ordered another with a fine nib. This is just a matter of preference, it's still a great pen, light and easy to use.

Lamy Safari fountain pen 4 stars Good budget pen Written by John Hancox

I bought this pen after the fuss made about Lamys on the Fountain Pen Network. As a budget pen, it is quite a good product - easy to hold, a bit on the light side and appears to be well made. However, I ordered it with a Fine nib and the German fine nibs are more like our medium so it was too wide for me. I therefore ordered an Extra Fine nib which is more like the English fine. The great thing is that the replacement nibs are cheap and very easy to fit, one of the big advantages of the design - why don't more companies adopt this idea? The Extra Fine nib is OK for me. I don't like the Lamy Blue Ink but with the converter you can use whatever ink you choose. In summary, it's a nice cheap pen. I wonder what the more up market models are like - do they compare with top of the range Parkers or Sheaffers or Caran d'Ache, to name but a few?

Did some further research online, and decided to try one, having never owned a Lamy previously. hi guys always loved the lamy fountain pens, seems i got twice one of a bad batch though... usually going for the matt black one, one day soon after getting me a new one, the ?screw?plug? on top of the cap popped out and got lost. i tried using a normal screw and hotmelt-glue but it doesnt look as good of course, before i left the country i thought i give me a shiny new one in metallic green - guess what? the same thing happened after a short time of use - i activated it a year ago and it took only a few months with the occasional usage to have the same thing happening :( pity as the pen / write-feeling with it is awesome nicki i use the medium nib i am sure, it is so nice and soft and writes wonderful, but the failing cap is a bit of a disappointment

Can left handed people use the pen?

Bureau replies... Lamy pens are suitable for left-handed people as the medium nib has a rounded tip. They do offer a left handed nib though which can be useful for some left-handers, it depends on your writing style.

Can I use Parker permanent black Ink with this pen?

Most pen manufacturers will only recommend their own brand of ink for use in their pens, but as a general rule, as long as you clean your pen thoroughly when using different inks there should be no problem with using another brand. We hope this helps!

Can you sell the Lamy Safari fountain pen fitted with an italic nib? Is that what you mean by broad? Can you sell it with a refillable reservoir?

                              The Lamy Safari Fountain pen can be ordered with an Extra Fine, Fine, Medium or Broad nib, which refer to the width of the nib. It is also available with a Left handed nib. You can however purchase other Z50 nibs separately and fit them yourself. The Lamy Z50 nibs are available in various sizes to purchase individually on the website and you can then fit the required size nib to the pen when you receive it. When will the 2011 lamy safari limited pink editon be available?

                           Unfortunately there is no Lamy Limited Edition Pink Safari pen in their range. There was a Pink version for 2009/2010, but these are no longer available. The 2011 Limited Edition colour was Aqua, and this year they have released the Apple Green colour. I hope this helps!

How does special ordering work? will it take longer to deliver and will it cost more?

                           Our special order lead times vary depending on which product you order. The Lamy special order is done every Thursday morning at 9.30am, for arrival on the following Tuesday/Wednesday, so carries a lead time of 1-2 weeks. It does not cost any extra for a special order, and you can select which service you would like your item despatched on once it arrives with us-our Saver delivery takes 3-7 days and is free, First Class post is 1-3 days at £3.95, and Express delivery is a next working day serviceat £7.95.                          The Lamy Safari Fountain pens with medium nibs, and the Safari Ballpoint pens come with a Lamy pouch included in the pack but otherwise, the Safari Rollerball pens and those with special order nibs arrive here loose.                                  Unfortunately Lamy no longer offer the Extra Fine nib on the Safari and several of the other models, and they have been discontinued as single nibs also so unfortunately they are no longer available to purchase individually.

Does the Lamy Safari Rollerball come in a matt finish black (or charcoal), or is it shiny?

                              The Lamy Safari Fountain Pens take the Z50 Nibs, which are available in our Inks and Refills section on the site at £4.00 each. They come in several different sizes including Fine, Broad and Left Handed, but the Lamy Safari Fountain Pens usually come fitted with a standard Medium Nib. Hope this helps!

I want to buy a Safari fountain pen, but I don't know whether it can be refilled? or it has a cartridge? If it could be refilled, I would like to purchase the ink together.

The Lamy Safari fountain pen takes the T10 ink cartridge. It comes with a single T10 ink cartridge, and we sell packs of T10 ink (packs of 5). You can also use an ink convertor - it takes the Z24 convertor, which will allow you to use the pen with ink from a bottle. Simply type T10 or Z24 into the search bar at the top of the website and they will come up.

We also sell T51 and T52 bottles of Lamy ink but you can use any good quality ink.

When can you purchase the limited addition of the Aqua safari during the spring season?

Is this still available in the limited edition orange colour?

The orange edition was available in 2008 and sold out at the time. Same for other limited editions including the lime green and blue with orange clip. The new Aqua colour will be available in Spring 2011.
