Monsieur Notebooks are beautiful handbound real leather journals with the scent and touch you only find with real leather. These books will improve as they age and the true grain of the leather is revealed. The paper is ivory 90gsm and fountain pen-friendly. Each book is individual as no two covers will be exactly the same. They are handmade in India providing fair wages and sustainable jobs and the production uses only environmentally-friendly processes.

The large Monsieur books are 148 x 210mm and have 192 pages

I bought this as a step-out trial - I'm a former Moleskine user, now converted by this wonderful site, to Rhodia and Leuchtturm. I liked the sound of the Monsieur, so I'm using the A5 notebook at work at the moment. The good - love the leather cover, the elastic fastener is keeping its elasticity, and no problem at all with feathering or bleed-through. The bad - the spine was very stiff indeed, and I'm ashamed to say I had to break the inside of it a little just to get the notebook to open wide enough to start taking notes. I'm a good few pages in now, and it still won't sit very flat. All in all, decent, and I'm happy enough to use it on a daily basis, but it's not in the same league as the really top notch notebooks.

The leather feels real nice and the notebooks is solid, but the paper is not as good as I expected, not so fountain pen friendly, but has a nice color and texture. 19th Feb, 2012

I had heard great things about these notebooks so I decided to give them a try - the paper is 90 gsm and fountain pen friendly, well, even quite a dry writing Conway Stewart with a standard Diamine ink bled though to the other side of the paper; a wet writing Pelikan M600 went though two pages (again with a Diamine ink). I really didn't expect this from a notebook that claims fountain pen friendliness. That said - if you are not bothered about fountain pen friendliness and don't mind the leather then this is a good solid notebook. It seems well made, the leather is solid and will protect the pages well, the elastic closure is well attached and the paper is a nice off-white (not too glaring). 3 stars because I am disappointed by the paper - otherwise a good solid notebook.

We were advised by the manufacturer on the quality of the paper and suitability for fountain pens, and we also carried out our own tests before offering the books and the paper didn't feather or bleed for us.
