Permanent, waterproof ink from Blackstone

Please note: Barrister Blue has a new formula using nano-pigments, rather than being an iron gall ink. As such, this ink is no longer blue-black but a true blue.

Blackstone Ink hails from Australia and is the result of a project that was initially geared towards powdered ink. When this proved impossible (for now) these inks were created and pretty impressive they are. In addition to the standard ink range, there is also this permanent ink, known as barrister ink. 100% waterproof, fade proof and highly resistant to bleach, alcohol and acid, it is available in black and blue.

The inks are all made in Australia with the technical supervision of an industrial chemist and are comprehensively tested by fountain pen users during development. They are exclusive in the UK to Bureau Direct.

NBThese inks have been designed for use in fountain pens, however due to the waterproof and permanent nature of the ink, they behave a bit differently to non-waterproof dye based fountain pen inks. Once the ink has dried, because it is waterproof, it cannot be dissolved and flushed away with water like dye based inks. The only way to remove it is by mechanical abrasion. To prevent this happening it is important not to leave this ink in the pen for too long without use because the water in the ink will slowly evaporate, the ink will become more concentrated and the nano carbon particles may begin to settle out because there is no longer enough water to hold them all in suspension. If you use your pen every few days this shouldn't happen. If you don't plan on using your pen for a week or so, it's best to drain the ink from the pen and flush it well.

Product Questions

Total 2 question(s)

Is it possible for you to produce and publish a better photo of the Barrister Blue ink swab please, so we can see the ink against a white background?

Question submitted by: Andrew Mackie on: 2017-01-26 11:11:09

Bureau replies: absolutely!

Answer submitted by: Mishka on: 2017-01-26 14:28:29

Is it fast drying, as I am left handed and usually smudge the ink when writing with fountain pens. How smudge proof is it

Question submitted by: Paul Humble on: 2017-02-02 11:32:07

Bureau replies: Dry time will depend on the nib size and paper used. It is very wet writing ink and it does take a little longer to dry.
