Day 5 - March 5th 2013

For those with distant memories of Bureau, there was a brief period when there were several shops dotted around London and beyond. Shops opened up in the City of London, on Kings Road, in The Oracle Centre in Reading and also in Kingston-upon-Thames. Kingston is a funny place, and it took me a long time to get used to where everything was. Maybe it was just me, but I would find somewhere once and then struggle to find it again. The place seems to have streets that lead you round in circles and you need to find yourself on the right loop to find somewhere again. Maybe this slightly odd theory explains why the shop in Kingston wasn't a great success, tucked away as it was down a side street called Thames Street. Not a hugely surprising name given that Kingston sits on The Thames, which I have now enjoyed walking from source to sea.

Q: How many counties do you walk through if you walk the Thames Path from source to sea? (post-1974 counties please)

A: Eight (Gloucs, Wilts, Oxon, Berks, Bucks, Surrey, Greater London, Kent)* -

* Please note that we actually had no winners of this question. Lots said 9, some said ten, some said 6. I went back over the route in some detail and I am sorry but it goes against my map-loving principles to award a prize for the wrong answer. Please do contact me if you disagree with my definition of 8 counties.

PLEASE DON'T ENTER THIS PRIZE. THE COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED AND HAS BEEN POSTED HERE AS AN ARCHIVE ONLY.

Well, Henri Desgranges (founder of the Tour De France) once said that his ideal race would be one that only one rider was capable of finishing - I guess with that question, you went one better :)

I suspect the people who came up with 9 followed the Thames rather than the path (eight counties and one metropolitan county), as I did. A friend of mine actually walked the path last year - he was no help at all, although if you'd asked for some pub recommendations, I think he'd have had provided several suggestions :)
