The Palomino Blackwing Vol. 10001 - the puzzle edition

Vol. 10001 - The Latest Blackwing Volumes Edition Pencil

This season's special edition Blackwing pencil is inspired by maths and the art of the puzzle as a teaching aid. It pays homage to Tetsuya Miyamoto, the Japanese inventor of the KenKen® puzzle. This puzzle was dreamt up in his maths class in 2004 as a way to improve his students' problem solving and logic skills, a method he called "The Art of Teaching without Teaching," and he hoped to make the world smarter with his invention. Today, the KenKen® puzzle, essentially of type of Sudoku, is the only puzzle printed daily alongside the New York Times Crossword. Puzzles like these inspire us to apply problem solving and logic in creative ways which use both the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

10001 is a numeral palindrome in Kanji as well as in Arabic (standard western) numerals. It is also linked to one of Miyamoto Sensei's favorite equations. The pencil features a red stained barrel, gold imprint and unique five-sided "Gōkaku pencil"  or pentagonal shape. Translated literally from Japanese, Gōkaku means "passed," as in a problem or exam. It is also a near-homophone for the Japanese word “Gokakukei," meaning pentagon. Gōkaku pencils are given to every student who graduates from the Miyamoto Mathematics class.

Each Blackwing 54 set contains 12 limited edition pencils.  As with all these editions, once they are gone, there will be no more so don't wait around!
