The cult pencil revived for the 21st Century

These American-made pencils are considered to be one of the finest ever made and have something of a cult following. Discontinued in 1998, they soon became hot property on eBay with single pencils selling for $40 each. Brought back from extinction after petitions and protests in 2011, these are still made from the same Californian incense cedar with the finest Japanese-crafted graphite core. They are a dream to write with - Half the pressure, twice the speedᅠ- is their motto. The eraser tip is flat-ended for accuracy and there are three versions which differ in firmness with the standard Blackwing the softest, the Pearl medium and the 602 the firmest.

These pencils have a proud heritage and famous users include John Steinbeck, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and Chuck Jones, who created Bugs Bunny with his Palamino.

Key Features:

  • This is the 602 version - the firmest of the three
  • 12 pencils per box
  • Erasers can be replaced, white and black available
  • 20cm long

What we like about this product:

  • Beautiful to write with, like no other pencil
  • Rock stars of the pencil world!

Just buy some

Thought I was crazy spending this much on a box of pencils. Maybe I am, but they are superb. Even this, the hardest lead gives a good, readable line on all sorts of paper. I use them with Field Notes, Moleskine, Rhodia note books and I love them. My pens are pushed aside, and my automatic pencil now only gets an outing in my Filofax (yes, I use it, every day). These are long pencils, good weight and feel in the hand. They look good and they sure do write good, very smooth writing, and when well sharpened the point lasts well too. Have since bought 1138s, much softer and darker, and am waiting on a box of 211s. Missed out on 725s, but hey. One thing, don't spend £10+ on the branded sharpener, look for alternatives, got mine from Hobbycraft ;-) Take the plunge and just buy some.
Beautiful tool for writing or sketching

I'd seen comments about Palomino pencils several times in the past year or so yet had been unable to find them in the UK. Then there they were in Bureau Direct's newsletter. Even better was that it was the one with the discount code! I hesitated for only a moment before ordering a pack of Blackwing 602 pencils. I wondered if it was the best choice for me. Would I get the darker line I wanted? They arrived in a lovely box. Twelve unsharpened pencils. I sharpened one and settled down to try it out by writing my daily notes. I'm in love with them. I wrote my notes and two crosswords with the first pencil. At this point (excuse the pun) it was time to re-sharpen it. I've put my pens away, sharpened two more 602s and looking forward to using them for writing.
